A TikToker draws attention to price differentials at Walmart in a series of videos comparing products in different sections of the store.
@georgia_bassmaster shared a video on the platform in late November, warning: “Don’t let Walmart rip you off.” This video has received 3 million views.
There he shows off a SanDisk 16GB SDHC card on sale in the camping department of Walmart for $ 10 – something he says is more than it should be, “just because they put these things in a case. camouflage “.
By comparison, it heads to the electronics section, where a SanDisk 32GB SDHC card is sold for just $ 7.28.
Viewers pointed out that there may be other differences between the cards that are not immediately noticeable without taking a closer look at the products. Still, @georgia_bassmaster seemed to point out that if you want to know what options are available to you at Walmart, you may need to check multiple departments for similar items.
In another video, the TikToker showed 50 feet of Walmart Ozark Trail-branded 550 paracord on display in the camping section for $ 5.20. But another Walmart brand, Hyper Tough, also offers 50 feet of 550 paracord for $ 3.94 more in the hardware department.
They also shared their frustrations that this type of practice appears to be common in businesses and industries, and is certainly not limited to Walmart.
“This is exactly why you are having a big party and not a wedding,” @triajace wrote.
Another reviewer pointed out that it looked like stores selling “salsa in the potato chip aisle versus the Spanish rice aisle”.
And women know this practice all too well.
“I’m a pink tax survivor,” commented @brittanystrauss, referring to the way basic products are marketed to women, such as razors and shampoos, often cost more. “It’s so sad that guys get ripped off for their rope.”
The items @georgia_bassmaster is comparing may not be perfectly equivalent to each other, but it’s a good reminder that thinking outside the box at a store like Walmart might lead to more options if you’re looking to save a dollar or of them. At the same time, having to put in so much effort just to compare similar items can explain why so many people are shopping online these days.
The Daily Dot reached out to @georgia_bassmaster via the TikTok comment and Walmart via their website.
